The Sun of Wisdom
by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso
We will be meeting the first and third Saturday of the Month, 1 - 3 pm to read and discuss our book selection.
The Saturday Study Group will be starting a new book on Saturday January 15, 2022 on zoom. Newcomers are welcome. The book is The Sun of Wisdom by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso. The author provides commentary on a few key verses from each of the chapters in Nagarjuna's Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way to help us understand the Buddhist Madhyamika view of emptiness. We will do a thorough analysis of the book by reading it out loud with pauses for discussion.
Understanding the view of emptiness is essential for dealing with the kleshas (negative emotions). A correct understanding of the view leads to a realization of ultimate truth and to Buddhahood. Wrong views, those not based in emptiness, lead to negative emotions.
Nagarjuna's work is the most basic and widely read text on Madhyamika philosophy. Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso writes in a very clear, brief and concise way. Sonam, the teacher for this group, said: "that is the beauty of this book."
Sonam Dorje, our teacher and spiritual friend, was born in Tibet and ordained a monk at the age of 5. Sonam has studied all 4 schools of Tibetan Buddhism and has had all the major empowerments. Sonam is retired from a career in biotechnology and is a scholar of physics as well as classical Tibetan Buddhism.
